The Story of Amron Silky Terriers & Norma Baugh

My name is Norma Baugh and my husband is Tom Baugh.  We are from Texas.  I have two grown children, Schelle and Scott, who now have families of their own.  That makes me a grandmother!!  I have been interested in some form of animals all of my life.  As a teenager and into young adulthood, it was horses.
Me & Care Bear.jpg (11643 bytes) My family and I competed in horse events for several years, until my husband's work moved us one too many times.  It became obvious we were not going to take the horses with us  with the move to Nebraska in 1974!  After a few months of only one dog and cat in the house, no horses to feed everyday, and nothing to clean-up after or take care of (besides my two children), I decided to attend a dog show!!!

Well, that was a BIG mistake!  Within 6 months, I had purchased a Yorkshire Terrier male.  He was 18 months of age, well trained for the show ring, and in full show coat.  I advise people, if at all possible, that this is the best way to start.  I only had to teach myself how to maintain his coat, and how to handle myself in the show ring.

Of course, anyone who has become involved in dog showing knows full well that is never stops at just one dog.  Before long, we had several Yorkies, a Lakeland Terrier and an English Springer Spaniel.  It didn't take me too long to realize that there was no way I could do justice to several breeds, and that I must decide what my goals were.

I really loved the Yorkie;  the stripping of the Lakeland was tedious and, as much as I loved the Springers, they were too large for me.   I zoned in on the Yorkie.  I even put a C.D. title on one that became too large for the Conformation Ring.  After a while, I became disenchanted with the Yorkie soundness, or lack thereof, and started looking for another breed.

sm-water-paw.jpg (1284 bytes) I had been studying books, etc. and had pretty much decided on Silky Terriers.  Then, I happened upon an Australian Terrier puppy at a Fun Match and fell instantly in love with her.  I had also contacted a Silky breeder that had a puppy for me.  So, I thought, "Okay, we'll see which one suits our family."

Both girls finished easily, and both had litters at approximately the same time.  I loved the feistiness of the Australian Terrier and the soundness of body.  But, they did need to be stripped and didn't have the lovely coat that I was missing from the Yorkie.   So it became that I settled on the Best of Both World.

I made the Silky Terrier my primary breed and have never been sorry.  I have now been breeding and showing Silky Terriers for almost 20 years.   I have had the #1 Silky in the U.S., the #1 Silky in Canada and the #1 Silky in England.  (Not all the same dog, either.)

sm-amron.gif (2703 bytes) My kennel name, Amron, is my first name, Norma, spelled backwards.   My daughter came up with this, one day many years ago.  When I was looking for a name to use on English Springers, as well as Yorkies,  I did want something "cutesy".
Most of my Silkys have become known for having BEAR in their names.  This started with my foundation studs - Ch. Amron's Hug-A-Bear, R.O.M.X. and Ch. Amron's I Don't Care  Bear, R.O.M.  I think I am better known as the breeder of the Bear dogs than as anything else!

I hope this has given you a little insight into me, and you will take a look at some of the photos of my dogs.  Enjoy the rest of the site.
